Everything You Need to Know About Make-Ready and Charge Ready NY

As part of New York state’s 2025 goal to reduce carbon emissions, the governor’s office has created two business-focused electronic vehicle (EV) charger rebate programs to incentivize public parking facilities, workplaces, and multifamily apartment buildings to add EV charging stations to their properties.

The Make-Ready and Charge Ready NY programs work in tandem toward the state’s goal of increasing the number of EV charging stations in NY to 50,000 in order to get 850,000 zero-emission vehicles on the road by 2025. A complementary third program — the Drive Clean Rebate initiative — provides NY residents who purchase or lease a new electronic vehicle (from participating dealers) can get a rebate of up to $2,000.

But what is the difference between these two business rebates? Charge Ready helps fund the actual EV charging units and Make-Ready helps fund the infrastructure needed for installing charging stations on your property.

Make-Ready Program Incentivizes EV Charging Station Infrastructure in New York

The first challenge in kicking off any major statewide utilities project is with infrastructure readiness. The Make-Ready program aims to solve this challenge with $700 million in incentives available through 2025 to help businesses who need to create the electric infrastructure for Level 2 and Level 3 charging stations. Make-Ready reduces the up-front costs of adding EV charging stations to your property. Rebates will depend on a variety of criteria and range from covering 50% of eligible costs all the way up to 100% of eligible costs. Higher incentives are set aside for sites closest to “environmental justice or low- and medium-income communities,” also referred to as Disadvantaged Communities (DAC).

To be eligible for the Make-Ready NY program, you’ll need to use one of the New York’s Joint Utilities Commission Approved Contractors. Future Energy is an Approved Contractor and offers turn-key EV charging environments paired with unique data and integration features.

Tell Me More About The Charge Ready NY Program

Charge Ready NY is an electric charger rebate program for businesses in New York state that install Level 2 EV charging stations on their property. Level 2 EV charging stations provide a range of up to 25 miles per car for each charging hour.

The Charge Ready program provides a rebate of $4,000 for each installed port. This rebate offers a potential 30% to 80% savings, depending on the costs of the port and installation. And there is an extra $500 incentive for each new installation within disadvantaged communities after December 10, 2020.

Participating businesses will need to choose an eligible network service provider. Future Energy partners with ChargePoint, the largest network. In fact, 74% of EV vehicle owners already have the ChargePoint App.

Because the Charge Ready program is aimed at increasing a broader use of electric vehicles, the rebates are not available to fleets, single-family homes, residential buildings with fewer than five units and workplaces with fewer than 15 employees.

Why Should EV Charging Stations Be a Priority for My Business?

If you’re reading this, you’re at least entertaining the idea of installing EV charging stations on your property, and you’re savvy enough to know to take advantage of these available government rebates. But there are three key, but very different, reasons to get the ball rolling now.

First, there is financial urgency. Out of the $17 million allocated to the program, only $6.6M remains (as of 3/17/21) and a $4,000 rebate per station is not something that you want to risk losing if installing stations is something that you will eventually implement.

Second, the availability of EV charging stations on your property increases your competitiveness, whether it be with customers, employees or tenants. With New York’s goal of getting 850,000 electric vehicles on the road by 2025, this may determine whether or not someone chooses to do business on your property instead of elsewhere. This is true now and this will compound every year going forward.

Third, but not least, contributing to a broad network of charging stations will facilitate the increase in electric vehicle usage, which is good for the environment.

Whether you’ve made the decision already or you aren’t ready to commit, it’s worth taking the next step to see if this decision is right for your business.
