Position Summary

Looking for a Contract to Hire Staff Accountant for a growing energy management company in Troy, MI. The Staff Accountant supports the Finance team through advanced accounting responsibilities including complex reconciliations, financial reporting, and compliance oversight. This role ensures accurate financial records and actively contributes to internal control development and process enhancement. The Staff Accountant plays a critical role in supporting audits, tax filings, and consolidated reporting, operating with a high degree of autonomy and technical expertise.

Job Responsibilities

Responsibility #1 – Financial Accounting & Reporting

  • Prepares and reviews journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations.
  • Oversees complex general ledger activities and ensures alignment with GAAP.
  • Leads the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. Supports month-end, quarter-end and annual accounting close by preparing timely general ledger and banking account reconciliations, analyses and journal entries.

Responsibility #2 – Compliance & Audit Support

  • Prepares documentation and reports for internal and external audits.
  • Ensures compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and company policies.
  • Supports the preparation of tax filings and regulatory reports.

Responsibility #3 – Process & Systems Optimization

  • Recommends and implements improvements to accounting systems and workflows.
  • Collaborates with IT and Finance leadership on ERP and reporting tools.
  • Maintains accuracy and consistency of data across platforms.

Responsibility #4 – Mentorship & Cross-Functional Support

  • Provides guidance and training to junior accounting staff.
  • Serves as a key contact for cross-departmental finance-related inquiries.
  • Acts as a 3rd level internal resource to assist team members in performing duties and providing expertise as needed.

Position Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field preferred.
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in accounting or financial reporting; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of accounting software such as SAP, Zoho, or NetSuite, and strong Excel and financial analysis tool(s) proficiency.
  • CPA certification preferred but not required.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills for collaboration and reporting.
  • High attention to detail and ability to work independently.
